Underused Denton rail line being considered as part of case to take trams to Stockport
TfGM has confirmed it is working with Stockport Council to develop a business case for extending Metrolink services from the current terminus at East Didsbury to Stockport. The proposal includes a ‘core’ extension into Stockport town centre and examines a longer-term option to convert the underused Denton rail corridor for tram-train use.

The strategic outline case now under development is the first stage of the business-case process. Alongside assessing the core East Didsbury–Stockport route, TfGM is also considering how the scheme could support future network growth. One option would see tram-trains continue beyond the town centre along the Denton line, connecting the area directly to the wider Metrolink system, including links to Tameside and Manchester Airport.
According to TfGM, reusing the existing rail corridor would improve public transport for communities currently served by very limited rail services. Andy Burnham, Mayor of Greater Manchester, said: “For too long, Denton has been overlooked and by working up the tram-train option to connect Denton and the wider area to the Metrolink is a big step toward unlocking opportunities for local residents and businesses.”
TfGM plans to complete the technical work required for the business case this year, with submission to the Department for Transport expected in early 2026. Subject to future approvals and funding, construction of the core East Didsbury–Stockport extension could begin by the end of the decade.
