The £17.9m contract covers improvements to the Metrolink tram platforms and construction of a new pedestrian footbridge over the tram lines. The project is being procured through the SCAPE Construction Framework, with completion expected in early 2028.

The 57m steel bridge will provide a direct connection to Union Square and a new pedestrian route offering step-free access to Pyramid Park. It will also allow passengers to continue reaching the tram platforms when the existing interchange is closed for the second phase of redevelopment.

Platform works will include resurfacing, replacement canopies, improved lighting, signage, CCTV, passenger information displays and ticketing facilities. A lift and stairs will connect the footbridge to the tram platforms.

The first phase is intended to enable the wider redevelopment of the interchange, which has served the town for more than 40 years. The second phase is expected to begin in 2028 and will involve rebuilding the interchange, alongside plans for new apartments as part of Bury Council's wider town centre regeneration programme.

TfGM said trams would continue running to Bury throughout most of the construction period, although some planned disruption would be required.

The appointment builds on previous work between Willmott Dixon and TfGM, including the £140m Stockport Interchange, which opened in 2024, and a separate £40m programme of bus depot electrification projects.
