Cardiff station to become key interchange with upgrade funding approved
Cardiff Central Station is set to undergo a major £140m transformation following approval of the full business case by the UK government, Welsh Government, and Cardiff Capital Region. The project, led by Transport for Wales, is designed to modernise the city’s main railway hub and support long-term passenger growth.
The upgrades are intended to strengthen Cardiff Central as a key interchange for rail, bus, and active travel modes, improving connectivity across the city and the wider South Wales region.
The investment includes a new southern entrance, an expanded concourse, extended platform capacity, and improved accessibility, with the aim of making the station more welcoming and functional for commuters and visitors.
Ken Skates, Cabinet Secretary for Transport and North Wales, described the approval as “a major milestone for our ambitious plans to upgrade Cardiff Central station,” emphasising the collaborative investment and expected benefits for passengers.
Beyond immediate transport improvements, the project is seen as a catalyst for city-centre regeneration. By enhancing the station environment and its interface with surrounding streets, bus routes, and cycling infrastructure, the development is expected to stimulate commercial activity, footfall, and wider urban renewal in the area.
The funding package includes contributions from the UK Government (£77.8m), Cardiff Capital Region (£40m), and the Welsh Government (£21m). Construction and delivery timelines will be announced once project planning and procurement processes progress.
