Construction begins on planned network of commercial vehicle clean energy hubs
Construction has begun on what Aegis Energy describes as the UK’s first clean multi-energy hub designed specifically for commercial vehicles, with the Sheffield facility expected to open in spring 2027.

Located at Smithywood Business Park near junction 35 of the M1, the hub will provide electric vehicle charging and HVO refuelling for vans and trucks. Aegis says the facility will be capable of serving more than 100 commercial vehicles a day.
The Sheffield site is the first in a planned network of clean energy hubs. Aegis currently lists further hubs in development around Warrington, Immingham, Corby and Dartford, with a longer-term ambition to establish a network of up to 50 sites across the UK.
The hubs will combine high-power charging and supply alternative fuels, allowing operators to use different energy sources as their fleets transition away from conventional diesel. The Sheffield facility will include charging infrastructure rated at up to 400kW, alongside HVO refuelling.
The programme is backed by investment manager Quinbrook Infrastructure Partners which committed up to £100m to Aegis Energy in January 2025.
Aegis intends to locate its facilities close to major motorways, ports and logistics centres to provide charging and refuelling options for vehicles operating on longer routes. The Sheffield hub is scheduled to open in spring 2027 and is intended to provide a template for the wider network.
