Government approves Peterborough Station Quarter regeneration plans
Government has approved the Full Business Case for the regeneration of Station Quarter in Peterborough which is set to transform transport connectivity and public spaces in the city.
Approval of the project, which covers the city’s railway station and surrounding land, follows the submission of the Full Business Case in March this year, but is still subject to the Government’s forthcoming Comprehensive Spending Review.
The project is being led by Peterborough City Council, the Peterborough and Cambridgeshire Combined Authority, London North Eastern Railway (LNER), and Network Rail.
The announcement clears the way for construction work to begin on the first phase – dubbed ‘City Link’ – later this autumn. City Link will replace the existing Cowgate underpass with a new direct pedestrian and cycle route between the station and the city centre, creating a safer and more welcoming gateway into Peterborough.
The near £48m government funding will be part match funded by Network Rail and Peterborough City Council through its Towns Fund allocation, taking the total pot to around £65m.
This will unlock the first phase of works and pave the way for future commercial and residential development in later stages of the wider Station Quarter plan.
The scheme includes a new western entrance and multi-storey car park, upgraded station buildings on the east side, and improvements to landscaping, public spaces and flood defences.
Peterborough City Council growth and regeneration cabinet member and councillor Nick Thulbourn said, “The approval of the Station Quarter project is a monumental achievement for Peterborough and I’d like to thank all those involved for their hard work to get to this point.
“This project will transform the station area into a vibrant gateway, enhancing connectivity and accessibility for residents, business and visitors. I’m looking forward to seeing the positive impact this development will have on our city.”
Work is expected to start later this year.
