Government confirms funding for North Hykeham Relief Road to unlock 4,500 homes

The Department for Transport has confirmed more than £110m in government backing for the North Hykeham Relief Road in Lincolnshire, a new dual-carriageway link between the A46 and A15. The project is expected to support the delivery of around 4,500 new homes and additional employment space in the wider Lincoln area.

Work on the new 8km-long road is due to begin in mid-March, with construction carried out by contractor Balfour Beatty. The dual carriageway is designed to improve connectivity into Lincoln, reduce congestion in nearby villages and enhance road safety. It will also include provisions for pedestrians and cyclists to encourage safer and more sustainable local travel as part of the scheme.

Local leaders estimate the road will deliver broader economic benefits for the county over the long term, potentially contributing hundreds of millions of pounds to the local economy through improved access to jobs, services and housing.

The relief road has been under consideration for nearly two decades, with planning permission granted following a lengthy route selection and consultation process. The current construction programme anticipates the road will be completed by May 2029, although this timeline may be subject to change as work progresses.

Councillors and business groups have welcomed the funding announcement.
