Strabag UK wins contract for rail freight interchange at Segro Logistics Park Radlett
Strabag UK has secured the £200m contract for the final phase of main works at the Strategic Rail Freight Interchange (SRFI) at Segro Logistics Park Radlett in Hertfordshire.
The interchange, located on the 1,000-acre site of the former Radlett Aerodrome, will provide 335,000 square metres of logistics space and will link to the Midland Main Line railway via a new two road rail connection. It is described as the only modern rail freight facility designed to serve London and the M25 region.
Work will take place over three years and includes the development of a terminal capable of handling 24 trains a day. The scheme is expected to remove up to 1,800 HGV journeys from UK roads daily, according to SEGRO.
The package of works contracted to Strabag UK includes the construction of the rail terminal, the preparation of plots for up the site’s warehouses and other associated infrastructure, such as roads within the site.
More than 600 acres of the site are earmarked for green infrastructure, including woodland, conservation grazing, and a country park.
VolkerFitzpatrick is delivering the rail infrastructure, including a 6,000-tonne jacked box underbridge that was installed during an eight-day blockade over Christmas 2024.
Consultant BWB and sub-consultant Tony Gee & Partners designed the bridge and embankment works.
Ian Burford, technical director at Strabag’s UK building arm, said the project would play a major role in reducing emissions and congestion by shifting freight from road to rail.
Charles Blake, senior director for national markets at SEGRO, said Strabag’s appointment marked a “vital next phase” of the project.
