TfW moves to satellite internet system for demand-responsive bus service users

A new satellite internet system is being trialled by Transport for Wales (TfW) for its demand-responsive fflecsi bus services in the small market town of Machynlleth in Powys, the most sparsely populated county in Wales.

The new system provides a reliable, high-speed wifi signal in remote areas where traditional mobile signals are unavailable.

Instead of fixed timetables and stops, fflecsi buses pick up and drop off passengers within a designated service area, based on bookings made via an app or on the phone. Users having reliable internet access is critical to the functioning of the service.

The satellite internet technology supports both real-time updates on bus locations and offers free, reliable wifi for passengers.

Created through a collaboration between TfW's Innovation Lab, installers Dragon WiFi, and operator Lloyds Coaches, the project showcases how technology is improving public transport accessibility and reliability for people across Wales.

Huw Morgan, Head of Integrated Transport and Bus Network Development, said, “It’s been great to see the positive impact that the new technology has had on the customer experience. It’s vital that we can provide clear updates on bus locations, especially in more rural areas like Machynlleth, where fflecsi is a lifeline for many.”

Naomi Colling, TfW’s Senior Planning and Development Manager for fflecsi, added, “This trial is a direct response to customer feedback about poor cellular coverage in rural areas. We’re committed to delivering a reliable service that truly meets their needs, and we’ll be constantly reviewing feedback throughout the trial to ensure we do just that.”

Guy Farley, a Director at DragonWiFi, said, “This positions Wales as a leader in connected transport, showing real innovation and commitment to new technology that benefits both passengers and operations.”

The Machynlleth trial will continue until March 2026. A separate trial is set to begin in Conwy in collaboration with OneWeb Technology.
