UK government backs TfW’s long term rail vision with seven new stations

The UK Government has announced funding to support the construction of seven new railway stations across Wales and a broader long-term commitment to modernise the country’s rail network. The initiative is part of a package of rail investment endorsed by Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer and aimed at boosting connectivity and supporting employment across Wales.

Under the plans, almost £500 million from the latest Spending Review will be allocated to develop new rail infrastructure, including stations at Magor and Undy, Llanwern, Cardiff East, Newport West, Somerton, Cardiff Parkway and a site serving Deeside Industrial Park. These sites are intended to improve access to rail services in both South and North Wales.

The announcement also formalises the UK Government’s endorsement of Transport for Wales’ long term rail vision, which sets out a pipeline of projects to transform services and infrastructure over the coming decade. The plan builds on existing Welsh Government investment, including over £1.1bn in upgrades to the Core Valley Lines and about £800m for a new fleet of trains.

The programme could support around 12,000 jobs across the rail network and contribute to economic growth by improving access to employment and services. Work on the first stations is expected to begin later in 2026, with other schemes planned to start construction by 2029.

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer said the investment marked a “generational commitment” to rail in Wales and emphasised the importance of sustained infrastructure development. The Welsh Government’s First Minister Eluned Morgan welcomed the backing, highlighting the potential to transform transport and connectivity for communities throughout the country.
