The inaugural UK–Malaysia Green Transport Dialogue, held in Kuala Lumpur and jointly organised by the British High Commission, Malaysia’s Ministry of Transport and the Malaysia Rail Development Corporation, recently brought together policymakers and transport authorities from both countries to exchange experiences on policy approaches, planning frameworks, technological innovation and operational best practice.

The British High Commissioner to Malaysia, Ajay Sharma, said “Drawing from decades of green transport policy development, institutional reform and operational expertise, the UK has proven industry experience in designing, managing and optimising multimodal transport systems that support sustainable urban development.”

The Kuala Lumpur delegation showcased UK companies and organisations with experience in areas such as integrated transport governance, transit oriented development, first  and last mile connectivity, sustainable rail development, modern tram design, bus network optimisation and financing. Representatives from UK bodies including Transport for London, Crossrail International and Connected Places Catapult participated in sessions alongside Malaysian counterparts.

The discussions are intended to deepen bilateral cooperation on sustainable transport solutions and to support Malaysia’s long-term goals of expanding low carbon public transport, accelerating electrification and embedding sustainability into urban planning.

The initiative reflects broader diplomatic efforts to strengthen ties between the UK and ASEAN partners on climate and infrastructure, building on existing economic and regulatory cooperation frameworks.
