WECA unveils transport vision of a reliable and integrated network
The West of England Mayoral Combined Authority (WECA) has published its long term transport vision that sets out a strategy for a “more reliable, connected and sustainable” transport network across the region, from buses and trains to mass transit and active travel.

The vision, titled A transport network you can trust, was launched by Helen Godwin, Mayor of the West of England, and regional leaders as part of efforts to build on recent funding secured from central government.
The document outlines a broad set of priorities intended to improve journeys for residents and support economic growth. It proposes reliable and affordable bus services, expanded rail services with new stations and more frequent trains, and development of a mass transit system linking key centres such as Bristol, Bath and North Somerset, with early concepts including potential connections to Bristol Airport – currently the largest UK regional airport without a mass transit link.
The document also highlights plans for better walking, wheeling and cycling infrastructure, more electric vehicle charging, improved streets and travel hubs, and integrated ticketing and information systems to make switching between modes smoother. It emphasises tailored approaches to meet different local needs, from rural bus services to major interchanges.
Mayor Godwin said the vision aims to address everyday frustrations such as unreliable services and congestion. “We need a transport system that people can trust, wherever they live. Together, we can and must deliver the integrated transport system that people need and deserve,” she said, stressing that investment already secured must translate into visible improvements for residents.
Councillors from member authorities, including Bath & North East Somerset, signalled support for the plan’s ambition to strengthen local economies and enhance sustainable travel. The vision aligns with broader regional strategies, including a ten-year Growth Strategy that positions transport improvements as central to unlocking jobs, investment and housing delivery.
The transport vision builds on the rollout of more than 250 new green buses and efforts to expand suburban rail services, alongside an unprecedented £752m in transport funding.
